Lightbridge Fuel™ is a more efficient, reliable and safe fuel for nuclear power plants. It enables plants to achieve 90% availability, which improves economics and makes it easier to scale up the use of nuclear power. Additionally, this fuel is less likely to cause accidents, making it a safer option for powering our planet.
The Lightbridge Fuel™ reactor can produce more power at a lower temperature than traditional reactors. This is due to two unique features of their fuel – an increased coolant flow rate and increased fuel surface area. The increased coolant flow rate helps to dissipate heat more effectively, while the increased fuel surface area provides more space for the fuel to react. This results in a reactor that is more efficient and can generate more power at a lower temperature.
One way they improved performance was by removing flow-restricting spacer grids that impede water flow. This increased the coolant flow rate, allowing more heat to be extracted from the core without having to increase pump power.
The increased flow rate kept the difference in outlet and inlet temperatures the same, but generated more electricity. Another way they improved performance was by increasing the amount of fuel surface area. This allowed for more heat generation while maintaining safety margins.
Power uprate and increased time between refueling outages for existing pressurized water reactors means that these reactors can produce more power with less down time. This means that they are more productive and efficient. The uprate allows the reactor to produce 10% more power, and the increased time between refueling outages means that there is less chance of an outage happening. This makes the reactor more reliable and dependable.
If current pressurized water reactors were to be powered up at a rate of 17% without increasing the amount of time between refueling outages, it would mean that the reactors could be powered up more often and would not have to be shutdown as often for refueling. This would be a great advantage for the reactors, as they would be able to generate more power and would not have to wait as long for refueling.
The power uprate proposed here would allow new build pressurized water reactors to increase their power output by 30%, without increasing the time between refueling outages. This would make these reactors more efficient and competitive in the energy market.
The company was formerly known as Thorium Power, Ltd. and changed its name to Lightbridge Corporation in September 2009.
