Rio Tinto Group (Stock Symbols – NYSE: RIO, LSE: RIO, ASX: RIO) is one of the world’s largest mineral resource companies producing a variety of commodities for global consumption including silver, iron ore, aluminium, molybdenum, copper, diamonds, titanium, borates, gold, nickel, lead, zinc, potash, titanium dioxide, salt, and uranium.
Rio Tinto (RIO Stock) Business Segments
The company’s operations are centered around four main business operations 1) Energy and Minerals, 2) Iron Ore, 3) Copper and Diamonds, and 4) Aluminum.
Rio Tinto PLC uranium operations include the Rossing Uranium mine in Namibia, and the now closed Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia.
These mines are operated under its business group Rio Tinto Energy.
The Ranger Uranium mine is located 11 miles east of Jabiru, Australia and 161 miles east of the capital city of the Northern Territory – Darwin, Australia.
The Rossing Uranium mine is 43 miles from the town of Swakopmund, Namibia located in the west-central part of the country.
This mine was first discovered in 1928 and by 1976 was in production operation.
The company also provides additional resources for the globe including alumina production, primary aluminum smelting, bauxite mining, alumina refining, and ilmenite, rutile, and zircon mining, as well as gypsum.
